Giovanni Casolla was born in Naples on 19 September 1777 to Francesco, a silversmith, and Angela D'Amore. On 18 March 1818, on the proposal of the Goldsmiths' Conservatory, he was hired by the "guarantee bureau", which had been created at the beginning of the nineteenth century on the French model, with the task of providing a single stamping service for all the Kingdom of Naples, to guarantee the silver produced there.

In 1831, Fortunato Tuccio, an official of the Royal Mint, highlighted Casolla among the best silversmiths in the city.
