cerchia di Luca Giordano (Napoli, 1634 – 1705)

a) Susanna at the bath; b) Meeting between Jacob and Rachel at the well

pair of oils on canvas
47x37 cm (each)

an apocryphal initials in the lower left corner

The pair of paintings presented here has been attributed to Giuseppe Simonelli, considered one of Luca Giordano's most trusted and expert collaborators, with a stylistic approach very close to his master in both composition and pictorial rendering. "Susanna Bathing" is very similar to the solutions used by Giordano for the same subject, while the figures in the canvas depicting "Jacob and Rachel at the Well" mirror those in the painting reproduced in Professor Giuseppe Scavizzi's recent publication: "Luca Giordano. New Works. Additions to the Catalog 2003-2023" (plate 85).
The works can be dated around 1680, the years in which Simonelli was most active in Luca Giordano's workshop
