AUCTION 109 | MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART

AUCTION 109 | MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART - Press

The new catalogue of the Modern and Contemporary Art auction is online on the new and renewed BLINDARTE website. The catalogue includes 175 works that will be auctioned on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at the headquarters in Naples. The works will be exhibited from November 20th at the Milan office of BLINDARTE in via Palermo 11. The catalogue collects selected works from the most varied media from the beginning of the '900 until today.

Among the proposed works of this new and long-awaited catalogue is undoubtedly the great work of Jan Fabre (Antwerp, 1958) entitled "Adsum qui feci (I, here before you, am the guilty party)"  of the series "Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas". The work performed in 2016 is an impressive mosaic, made with thousands of iridescent wings of scarab jewel, expertly built to give a unique aesthetic.
The work, realized by the artist for the important exhibition "Jan Fabre: Knight of Despair / Warrior of Beauty" held between October 2016 and April 2017 at the Hermitage of Saint Petersburg, is proposed with an estimate of € 100,000/150,000. It deals with two themes dear to the great Belgian artist: vanity and fidelity, themes that are repeated in many of his other visual and theatrical works, in this case represented through the symbols of dogs and the clock. The clock is the emblem of the vanity and transience of life: according to the artist, man must engage in noble ideals, such as beauty, in order to transcend the temporal dimension of earthly existence. Dogs symbolize loyalty, loyalty, devotion, but also submission.
Also by Jan Fabre is proposed in the catalog another particularly important work, it is "Battlefield" (estimated € 35,000/45,000) of 1998. The work is presented as a large horizontal table on which is reproduced a battlefield: the peculiarity consists in the fact that instead of soldiers swarming on the ground, between the multiple heights, we see beetles of varied colors, busy in a synchronous march or in the displacement of boulders or in a hiding post before the great battle

Of great interest is also the work of Gilbert & George (San Martino in Badia, 1943 and Plymouth, 1942). The work of 1980 entitled "Tree Jesus" proposed at auction is the most iconic: 16 prints in silver jelly inserted inside frames of artist. The work demonstrates the daring commitment of the artistic duo with delicate issues: "We are dealing with universal topics: death, hope, life, fear, sex, money, race, religion - these are things that are relevant to everyone" (from the artist’s biography published on tate.org.uk). Gilbert & George have repeatedly returned to the subject of crucifixion, attracted by such a powerful image of pain and vulnerability. This image is not an expression of religious faith, but rather an exploration of the shared human experience of suffering. For artists, the suffering of Jesus is a metaphor for a universal truth. Not afraid to face such an iconic image, they impose their characteristic format of the large grid, thus breaking the image of Christ on the cross. The work is offered for auction with an estimate of € 80,000/120,000.

"Le Cygne Noir", is instead the title of the suggestive work of 1993-94 by Giulio Paolini (Genoa, 1940) proposed at auction with an estimate of € 40,000/60,000. The work is the symbol of Paolini’s poetic work imbued with theatricality, with a structural component that could be defined as almost architectural, so the scenography becomes an essential part of it. The proposed work presents "on an easel placed in the middle of two sheets of plexiglas, overlapped in a staggered manner and engraved along the diagonals, is a third plate of the same size, also squared in the diagonals, which bears drawn in black ink the profile of a swan in anger. In correspondence with the eye of the swan, which coincides with the meeting point of the engraved diagonals, a black pencil holds back some indecipherable photographic negatives. '' (Excerpt from Maddalena Disch, Giulio Paolini, Catalogo Ragionato Tomo secondo 1983-1999, page 724).

The artist Piero Dorazio (1927-2005) is present in the catalog with "Fontainebleau" a large oil on canvas in very bright colors proposed at auction with an estimate of € 100,000/150,000 . The imposing painting of 1988, measuring 190x210 cm, is a work in which full color, space, matter, size and movement combine to convey emotions, with sign and form that become the only means of expression. Also from the Forma Uno group, one of the most iconic works by Giulio Turcato (Mantua, 1912 - Rome, 1995) is presented: a very successful "Lunar Surface" of 1975 (estimate € 35,000/45,000), in which orange lines of pure energy are arranged on the silver surface, clear representation of the Earth’s satellite, made a few years after the famous moon landing. By Carla Accardi (Trapani, 1924 - Rome, 2014), always belonging to a group born in Rome in March 1947, finally three works are presented including an intriguing casein tempera on paper of 1962 entitled "Bleviola" (estimate € 18,000/25,000)with interesting colour and shape choices.

By Mario Schifano, the highest representative of Italian pop art, is proposed an important painting on paper of 1964 (estimated € 20,000/30,000) among the most successful monochrome made by the author in the 60s characterized by a zero surface painting: works like this sanctioned the success of the artist worldwide. It should also be noted the work of Franco Angeli, also an artist of the School of Piazza del Popolo, mixed technique on canvas with veil of 1968 entitled "Of America" (estimate € 22,000/26,000) where to emerge is one of the most famous and successful subjects of the artist, the famous profile of the American eagle. Tano Festa, another pillar of Italian pop art and the School of Piazza Del Popolo, finally there are three iconic works made in the eighties.

"Red" is instead the title of the 1968 extroflected cire by Agostino Bonalumi presented in this auction. The work, a perfect synthesis between painting and sculpture, presents two perfect symmetrical "bellies" on the sides of the canvas. These innovate in an excellent way the artistic production of the time, activating a new and unprecedented relationship between the work, its surfaces and space, emphasizing the conception of the painting as a physical object and perfect fusion between painting and sculpture, that the critic Gillo Dorfles defined "Paintings-Object". The work is auctioned with an estimated 70,000/90,000 euros.

In the first part of the catalog are presented some important works of the '900, among these it is necessary to dwell on the painting by Filippo De Pisis "Jesuit Church in Venice" of 1944, characterized by rapid brushstrokes, light, and pleasant color combinations, typical of the impressionist technique with which the artist portrayed his beloved Venice, and in particular the view of the church, which he described in "Ore Veneziane, 1974": "I saw the facade stand white in profile with its statues and at the bottom appeared a gentle strip of intense blue: the lagoon, the sea and then down, like a glory of clouds the Alps with white peaks. Crazy serenity of lights and colors". The work of 80.5x60 cm,3 is presented at auction with an estimated € 18,000/25,000. Also worth a closer look is the colorful painting of 1945 by Enrico Prampolini entitled "Cassandra" (estimated € 15,000/20,000) and the oil on cardboard "Via San Leonardo" by Ottone Rosai of 1946 (estimated € 6,000/8,000)Also worthy of note are the 3 beautiful works by Mario Borgoni that open the catalogue and are inspired by 3 seasons of the year (estimate € 1,500/2,000 each) and some works on paper by Renato Guttuso.

"De Adra Cabo de San Antonio y de Cabo Tres Forcas a Cabo IVI" is the title of the 2007 work of Julian Schnabel (New York, 1951) presented at auction and belonging to one of his most successful experiments, and now iconographic, the one that concerns nautical maps. The work is presented in the catalogue with an estimate of € 26,000/32,000.

Stephan Balkenhol (1957) is present in the catalog with four works, among them stands out "Boot (Model)" of 2009 (estimated € 25,000/35,000), precious carved wooden model and painted inside the artist’s studio for the boat-sculpture on the pier of Blankenberge made on the occasion of the triennial exhibition "Beaufort 2006".

Thomas Houseago (1972) is present in the catalog with "Roman Mask I" of 2013, belonging to the famous and sought-after series of homonymous works of the artist. Houseago’s mask is a concentrate of coarsely shaped matter: imposing and jagged edges, characterized by a strong play of light and shadow that reveals the profile of a deformed skull, supported by a metal skeleton and composed of its peculiar mixture, the "Tuf-Cal", which the artist models materially using hands and feet. The result is a sculpture that conveys both physical strength and emotional vulnerability: the two contrasting feelings come together to compose a surprisingly raw and energetic work. The work, coming from the Gagosian Gallery, is auctioned with an estimated € 60,000/80,000.

The work of Anish Kapoor (Mumbai, 1954, lives and works in London) instead is a gouache on paper of 2014 where to dominate is the red color that expresses, in the language of the artist, the exploration of the interior of the body, showing what is usually hidden under the skin, what dwells deep within us. A bright, intense red that is torn by a central black chasm, which becomes habitable space by the imagination of the viewer. The work is offered for auction with an estimated € 40,000/60,000.

At auction also the "Table basse trapezoidal «Têtes de chiens»" by Diego Giacometti with an estimate of € 80,000/120,000 and the famous screen printing "Vesuvius" by Andy Warhol estimated 40,000/60,000 euros. Highly representative of the artistic production of Erik Parker (1968), German-American artist, is the large and colorful oil, graphite and marker on board titled "Groovy BOB", made in 2003, already of the Marino Golinelli Collection (estimate € 20,000/30,000). The artist layers images, creating a psychedelic collage through the use of seemingly infinite shapes, using bright colors, with a style that limits the excessive saturation of visual images today: "I try to fit as much as possible in a painting. I try to make loaded paintings, because we live in loaded times". (Taken from the interview with Erik Parker, curated by the Paul Kasmin Gallery, 2015).

Worthy of note in the catalogue: a precious small painting by Salvo from 1983 entitled "Winter Landscape" presented with an estimate of € 6,000/8,000; an important and large oil on canvas by Emilio Tadini from 1986 entitled "The museum that falls" (estimate 15,000/20,000)but also the beautiful work of Antonio Bueno "Marinaretto" (estimate Euro 7,000/9,000), two particularly important works by Josef Felix Müller and a mixed technique by Andrè Masson of 1949 ca. proposal with an estimate of € 5,000/8,000. And again, three works by Toshimitsu Imai, "Dedra" by Mimmo Rotella (estimated 3,000/4,000), "The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" by Bruno Munari composed of n. 17 mixed techniques on paper + 2 n. sheets handwritten by the artist + n.5 sheets typed and proposed at auction with an estimate of € 7,000/10,000. There are also three works by Arman and the works of Pino Pinelli, Getulio Alviani, Alighiero Boetti and Enrico Baj. Do not forget the work of Ettore Spalletti of 1993, a mixture of color on alabaster, presented with an estimate of € 25,000/35,000 and the "Untitled (from the series Nepal)" by Antonio Dias (estimated 15,000/20,000).

For the + contemporary works are certainly worth mentioning "I don’t know", a large painting on canvas by Christian Rosa proposed with an estimate of € 15,000/20,000, and the "Berlitz Papi" by Donna Huanca. Claire Fontaine’s famous screen printing "We Are All Ready-Made Artists" of 2006 estimated 5,000/7,000 euros, a work/sculpture of Rodney Graham, "The submerged caravels" by Piero Golia (estimate 6,000/8,000); the sculpture in bronze plated gold 24k "The Golden Balls of my youth" by Terence Koh estimated 8,000/12,000 euros and the multimedia and very successful work of Federico Solmi "Chinese Tyrant Time Square Throne Speech" composed of an acrylic on paper applied on board, gold leaf and two LCD screens with remote control (estimate € 8,000/12,000).
