Figure of a Working-Class Woman (The Water Carrier)

terracotta, wood, fabric, metal
h cm 44
Head and hands in polychrome terracotta, with a highly expressive quality.
The female figure depicted corresponds to the classic archetype of the "acquaiola" (water-bearer), as evidenced by the burnished metal bucket with a wire handle.
Her attire consists of a white chemise with a gathered neckline, worn beneath a bodice made of fabric featuring ochre and gold floral motifs, and an amaranth-colored wool jacket trimmed with embroidered passementerie. The tiered skirt, adorned with geometric patterns and decorative bands of velvet and silver galloon, is partially covered by an apron (mappa) made of raw linen and vintage lace, gathered at the left hip. A traditional kerchief ('o maccaturo) of light-colored fabric is draped over her shoulders. Also noteworthy are the boat-shaped pendant earrings made of metal, and necklaces consisting of cords made from patinated metal.
The nativity figure rests on a contemporary base, fashioned from cork and tree bark to simulate rocky terrain.
