The painting depicts Caroline Murat bidding farewell to her children on the road to exile, which would lead her to leave Naples, at the end of French rule, for Trieste.
The children will take refuge in Gaeta before reuniting with their mother.
The poignant scene has as its backdrop the Gulf of Naples with Mount Vesuvius and the Palazzina dei Principi in Capodimonte.
