Manifattura napoletana, primo quarto XIX secolo
Bagpiper
Provenance: Naples, Catello collection
cm h.35
Terracotta head, glass eyes, carved and polychrome wooden upper and lower limbs; mannequin made of wire and tow. Dressed in various fabrics: canvas, patterned silk. He carries a bagpipe in his hand. On his feet are the typical cioce, leather and canvas sandals.
The figure was originally placed in the scene of the Annunciation, where, according to the Gospel of Luke, the shepherds, exhausted by toil, were placed, some immersed in a restful sleep, others continuing to watch over the flock. According to eighteenth-century tradition, the scene takes place around stables and rough farmhouses, representing the world of poverty and deprivation.
