«A work of art must be significant of its time, like any other intellectual manifestation, whatever it may be. And painting as visual is necessarily the reflection of external conditions. Every pictorial work must have a momentary value and an eternal one, which lasts in time» (Fernand Léger)
Fernand Léger (Argentan, 1881 - Gif-sur-Yvette, 1955) was one of the pioneers of modern art, moving between cubism and surrealism. Throughout his career, the French artist has embraced several disciplines, including painting, sculpture, cinema, graphic design and scenography. His work is characterized by the use of geometric shapes, primary colors and a particular attention to the representation of modernity and technology.
The paper gouache of 1950 ca. proposed here, from the collection of the artist’s heirs and registered at the Comité Léger, is entitled "Projet d'illustration". The three main colors (red, white and blue) are those of the French flag and above them are the features of a female face.
