Stephan Balkenhol (Fritzlar, 1957) is one of the most established sculptors in the contemporary art scene. By cleverly fusing two opposing tendencies such as the immediacy of the sculpted figure and the minimalistic essentiality, Balkenhol goes beyond the traditional role of sculpture through a research focused on ordinary people, rather than on historical and well-known figures. Within his artistic practice he extracts from wood male and female figures characterized by a sense of calm and elegance; sculptures that appear as the formal synthesis of the essence of human feelings. Apparently crystallized over time, the bodies, painted in monochrome and intense colors, return all the dignity and complexity of the contemporary individual.

"Männlicher Akt" is one of the artist’s most representative works. It is a sculpture in patinated and painted bronze depicting a male naked body. The work, executed in 2008, is placed on an iron pedestal that, like other works by the artist, is an integral part of the installation.

«I do not intend to launch a precise message through my works, it would be demeaning for the figures to become mere vehicles to convey a message. I let everything be open to subjective interpretation, giving the observer the possibility of observing himself through my sculptures». (Stephan Balkenhol)
