The photographic production of Naples in the second half of the 19th century was numerous and of great quality, especially at the service of documenting the archaeological discoveries which between Pompeii and Herculaneum continued to fuel the myth of the Grand Tour, enriching the rooms of the Royal Museum of Naples.
Photographers such as Sommer or Amodio produced a detailed series of shots to immortalize the uniqueness of the ancient as well as the landscape and artistic beauties that made the Neapolitan capital an extraordinary travel destination.
The photographic prints presented here are from the "Unalterable Edition" directly at the service of visitors to the Royal Museum between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.
They contain the numbering of the museum cataloging of the sculptures at the bottom, and are the largest editions ever produced, therefore representing a rare and unique testimony that has survived to this day.
