Vincenzo Gemito

(Napoli, 1852 - 1929)

Vincenzo Gemito has always been deeply influenced by the art of ancient times. The artwork presented here is a reproduction of the bronze depicting Narcissus emerged in Pompeii in 1862. Made 24 years after the discovery of the original, Gemito deviates from the original in the position of the left arm and emphasizes its anatomical perfection, giving a personal reinterpretation of the ancient beauty, drawing inspiration from the young fishers and the typical Neapolitan "scugnizzi"  that animated the streets and the port of Naples.
